Are you experiencing depression?

You’ve survived another long day at work holding it together. You smile. You laugh. Your boss compliments your work. You finish your projects and give cheerful goodbyes. Then, you finally get home...

Many believe that depression is “just feeling sad.” While sadness can be a part of depression, it is far more complex. Many people share that it feels more like being numb. As if you can’t feel anything at all. There is no pleasure. No excitement. It’s difficult to look forward to anything, but it’s also hard to be in the present moment.

The most difficult part is not feeling like yourself. Sometimes you can’t even remember who you are. “I used to enjoy playing soccer, but I can’t even think about lacing up my cleats.” “I thought I loved cooking new meals, so why does even heating up a frozen meal feel like too much effort?”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Because depression lies on a spectrum, it can appear in many different ways. Some people just feel sad and don’t know why. Some feel numb and apathetic. Some may actually feel happy but are disconnected from other emotions and parts of themselves. It is also very common for people to experience depression, but to others they look fine. Due to social/cultural/familial stigma, beliefs, or other reasons, many of us are well-programmed to hide our inner experience and continue to operate our lives in a way that looks “acceptable” for others. Sometimes, we can even trick ourselves into thinking we are ok when we are really not.

In therapy, we will explore your personal experience with depression and learn ways to meet your needs, process your emotions, and reconnect with a life that has meaning, fulfillment, and happiness for you.

  • Depression is a spectrum, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone. What matters most is your current experience not the label or diagnosis. In therapy, we will focus on what you are recognizing in your life that contributes to not feeling your best or being able to function the way you want to. If any of the above connected with you, it’s worth looking into it. You deserve to live the happiest, healthiest, and most fulfilling life you can. Let’s explore what that looks like for you!

  • Depression is a feeling or experience. As with all of our emotions, they do not define us. Emotions aren’t negative or wrong. They are simply messages that tell us something needs attention. In therapy, we can explore why you are feeling the way you are. We will identify what you are experiencing, process what needs are asking to be addressed, and learn how to meet those needs in ways that are practical, doable, safe, and comfortable for you.

  • As long as you are not actively in danger, therapy can be very helpful. Typically, suicidal thoughts or ideations are a natural extension of living an extended amount of time with unmet needs. This can appear as depression, anxiety, or many other mental health experiences. Together, we will work on developing a safety plan, connecting to resources, and exploring the unmet needs underneath these thoughts. Your safety will always be a priority, and we will work collaboratively to identify a life that’s worth living for you.

  • When beginning therapy, we will explore your current experience and how it is affecting you. Then we will dig into different aspects of your life to help you identify why you are feeling the way you do. This can look like exploring habits, home life, relationships, work, social life, finances, health, politics, and current methods of coping. Once you’ve identified changes you want to make, we will create a plan to remove unhealthy pieces, change what we can, and learn healthy ways to cope with stresors. We will also explore your values, identity, and goals to rediscover what is important to you and gives you meaning, direction, and purpose in your life.
