What are the benefits of self pay for therapy?

When you use your health insurance for therapy, your insurance provider requires access to your records, mandates what must be disclosed in notes, regulates diagnoses, and dictates type or length of treatment.

Often times, people are denied coverage because insurance does not think you need therapy or wants you to be given a particular diagnosis. These companies will limit the number of sessions you can have or require you to only have a certain type of therapy. This should never be the decision of someone who has never met you and does not have appropriate mental health training or experience.

When you pay out of pocket, you are guaranteed complete control and privacy over your own treatment. No one else will see your confidential information, and your treatment will not be directed by an insurance company.

‍ ‍You should feel safe to discuss your identity, personal choices, and life experience with your therapist. No third party should be able to access your most personal details. Privacy and confidentiality is essential to the therapeutic relationship and will always be protected in our sessions.

If you have any questions regarding using self pay for therapy, contact me today or schedule your free consultation. I would love to discuss how your investment in yourself can also come with complete privacy and control over your therapy journey!

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.

  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
